Energy Mining and Chemicals

Energy mining remains a highly strategic field for China’s economy. Despite progress of Renewables, coal remains at the core of electric power production. After a 2021 national energy crisis that stressed its unavoidable role, it still has perspectives. Whereas domestic production remains dominant for coal, strong development of gas in China has played on both domestic production and imports developments. The situation has long been different for oil, resulting in 72% of China’s consumption imported in 2021.Restructuring has been a priority for the whole energy mining sector for some years ; but it covers very different evolutions from one segment to the other. In the over-fragmented coal sector, it means concentration. In the oil and gas segment, an opposite trend has been at work, and the sector has been opened to new actors, both public and private, diversifying from downstream chemicals industry.
